5 Reasons Why People Don’t Follow You on Twitter

Do you wonder why despite your marketing efforts, you still don’t have followers other than those who personally know you? Okay maybe a handful of them have been lured to following you, but you still haven’t reached to more than 100 followers. What could you be doing wrong?

Twitter is having a relationship with your followers. Just like when you’re social networking in the “real world”, impress them with your intelligence, expertise and impeccable taste on things. But if you display questionable practices, you’ll surely go back to your office without a potential client’s business card. Signing up to Twitter is easy but managing it poses the challenge. If you’re not willing to invest time to learn what you can do differently, you’ll end up abandoning not just your profile but the great opportunity to grow your business using this social channel.

Be alert on the following common mistakes some businesses make on Twitter and start attracting “tweeple“:

Incomplete or non-existent profile and bio. Who likes to follow an egg, really? Setting up a profile is easy so if yours is void of at least a proper avatar and brief description, a potential follower will think you’re either lazy or don’t really want care about professional connections. Upload your photo and write a good description of you and your business. Remember, a blank profile makes you look like a scammer.

Automated tweets. It’s okay to schedule tweets but not to a point where your followers will wonder if your account is managed by a bot. Schedule tweets on days when you’ll not be online but still want to share a post or two. Twitter is a constant and real-time stream of information so personalize your tweets and share information and thoughts at once.

Repetitive tweets and flooding. Avoid broadcasting the same links and tweets more than what’s necessary, and that usually means just once. Sharing a blog post or promotion a couple of times is fine, rewording them interestingly. But if it’s going to look like an endless stream of the same thing, you’re inviting some unfollows there.

Ceaseless selling. You’re a business, you sell something. The followers get it. However there are other ways to be active and engaging on Twitter other than selling your products. For example, if you’re retailing the new Apple 4S version of the iPhone, share interesting articles and links about the product such as its outstanding features, sales analysis, and consumer reviews.

Zero engagement. Social media is all about connecting, sharing, engagement. If users mention you on a positive light, retweet and reply to them. Respond to their questions and feedback. Encourage public response and never ignore your followers.
